A Precognitive Song Lyric Sunday and #LoIsInDaBl Day 21

Why, hello once again! Are you ready to play with music? I am! Today’s Love Is In Da Blog  prompt is to share a song I loved as a child. So, in conjunction with Song Lyric Sunday, let’s travel back in time to the middle of the 1970s, to when I was a little, little girl…

So, in the title, I mentioned precognition. That’s because my song for today was surprisingly accurate in predicting my life, in ways I never imagined when I was a four year old.

Rocky Mountain High

He was born in the summer of his 27th year, coming home to a place he’d never been before.
He left yesterday behind him, you might say he was born again,
you might say he found a key for every door.
When he first came to the mountains, his life was far away on the road and hanging by a song.
But the strings already broken and he doesn’t really care,
it keeps changing fast, and it don’t last for long.

And the Colorado Rocky Mountain high, I’ve seen it raining fire in the sky.
The shadows from the starlight are softer than a lullaby.
Rocky Mountain high, Colorado. Rocky Mountain high.

He climbed cathedral mountains, he saw silver clouds below,
he saw everything as far as you can see.
And they say that he got crazy once and he tried to touch the sun,
and he lost a friend, but kept the memory.
Now he walks in quiet solitude, the forest and the streams, seeking grace in every step he takes.
His sight is turned inside himself, to try and understand
the serenity of a clear blue mountain lake.

And the Colorado Rocky Mountain high, I’ve seen it raining fire in the sky.
You can talk to God and listen to the casual reply.
Rocky Mountain high, Colorado. Rocky Mountain high.

Now his life is full of wonder, but his heart still knows some fear,
of a simple thing he can not comprehend.
Why they try to tear the mountains down to bring in a couple more,
more people, more scars upon the land.

And the Colorado Rocky Mountain high, I’ve seen it raining fire in the sky.
I know he’d be a poor man if he never saw an eagle fly,
Rocky Mountain high, the Colorado Rocky Mountain high, I’ve seen it raining fire in the sky.
Friends around the campfire and everybody’s high
Rocky Mountain high, Colorado. Rocky Mountain high.
Rocky Mountain high, Colorado. Rocky Mountain high.

Written by John Denver and Mike Taylor (and one of Colorado’s two official state songs,  which I didn’t know before now).

From A-Z Lyrics

I remember sitting on the floor in the living room, with my ear pressed against the speaker of the my parents’ cabinet stereo/bar. I was intrigued by the imagery of this song (imagery and words have been moving forces in my life since I was in my crib), and the hints of deeper meanings and messages it contained.

I wasn’t sure what “cathedral mountains” were, but I could feel the magic there, and I couldn’t understand why anyone would stop being someone’s friend because they’d done something like trying to touch the sun. Even then, I knew I wanted friends that would support me when I did the daring and crazy thing, and understand that sometimes you just have to.

Sitting on that floor in upstate New York, in the tiny village where I’d lived my whole life, I couldn’t know that, in the winter of my own twenty-seventh year, I would be on a train, in the Colrado Rockies, heading for a job in a place where I knew absolutely no one. For the first time in my life, I was right there, and I could see the beauty, the dangers, and the magic. I even saw my first bald eagles soaring above a river.

When I reached the Grand Canyon, and my new job, I met the man I’d marry just over six months later. My life as I now know it simply wouldn’t exist without that decision to go west.

What songs do you remember from childhood? Want to join in?

Here are the “rules”…

  • Post the lyrics to a favorite song or a new song you want to share
  • I’ve started including who wrote the song. (I think it’s a good idea to give credit where credit is due)
  • Make sure you also credit the singer/band and provide a link to where you found the lyrics
  • Link to the YouTube video, or pull it into your post so others can listen to the song
  • Ping back to this post or my own Song Lyric Sunday post
  • Read at least one other person’s blog so we can all share new and fantastic music and create amazing new blogging friends in the process.

May your day, week, and be filled with love in all its many facets.

  1. Oh I love “Rocky Mountain High” even though it’s rather a song of my 20’s and my second boyfriend 🙂

  2. I grew up listening to John Denver and have always loved his music. What a beautiful story! I love how things are so interconnected sometimes. Great choice, Shan! Thanks for playing along. 🙂
