Engaged on New Course Heading: #ROW80/#12WeekYear R2Y7MW1

Hey there!

Welcome  to the first official check-in of the brand-new round. I’m off and cruising on my fresh batch of goals, and I’ve decided to do a bit of changing up to the way I score this round, so, if you’ve visited me in any of my previous rounds, this update will look a bit different.

It’s always bothered me to have red for items that I can’t do yet. To me, red means something I wanted to get to, planned to get to – but didn’t get to. It doesn’t mean that it’s Wednesday, and this can’t happen until Friday, or that I’m doing April challenges now, and this one’s for May.

So I’ve taken my Weekly Action Plan and segmented it. I’m only counting my progress from Monday-Wednesday. Any tasks or portions of tasks planned for later in the week will be in the end-of-week update.*

This way, I get a very specific idea of what I did and didn’t achieve for this first two days. I have a strong feeling this is going to be very motivational (and educational) for me.

*It’s worth noting, though, that my Action Plan was created late Tuesday evening, so this isn’t quite as representative for this two days as it will be for the rest of the round.

How do you break up your goals?

Do you go for a cumulative, round-long approach, by the session, or somewhere in between?

Have you ever changed things up?

How did that work for you?

  • I explore one DIY-MFA HUB webinar, interview, forum thread, or live call, assess where I am with Pixels to Platform, and map my way to the end of the current module (4/5). I’ve watched an excellent two-hour webinar on Plotting and Story Structure.
  • I complete the current scene of On Any Tuesday Night for Lesson 6 of How to Revise Your Novel and assess how many scenes remain.
  • I reread all poetry in my chapbook file and compile. I need 11 pages for the Poetry Workshop submission; make additions/deletions as needed, create cover page, and submit.

  1. Oooh! Pretty shadow jewelry!

I’ve had almost the whole week to watch your progress, and I can see you whomping your lists even when you have off days. I’m very much looking forward to seeing how this new way of recording your progress contributed to that goal slaying!

  2. I usually use red for something highly critical, which goes back to when I need to do a stop light report for upper management. It’s the colour that tells them they need to get involved with something.

I think focusing on smaller chunks is a good thing. You may find you get even more done 🙂

  3. Looking good! My check-ins usually comprise my progress for the whole month. But, i put under each what I did on them for the week(other than my reading goals, I keep the whole monthly list of books there). The red doesn’t bother me too much, since it shows what i still need to get to.

    • I have long-term and deeply rooted issues with the color red, which makes it a good one for things I’m not attending to as I want to – but not so good, maybe, when it’s just not time to get to them yet.

  4. What a coincidence. I also don’t like red type for those goals I haven’t made progress on . . . yet! So this week, I also started by talking about what I have done. Still working on keeping those goals visible but simpler reporting. Your progress and reporting is always so clearly organized. Perseverance furthers!

    • It’s interesting that we had kind of the same idea at about the same time, Beth! Honestly, it’s bothered me for a long time, but on a kind of below-the-surface way, so I couldn’t quite figure out what the sticking point was.

I’m glad I did, and that you did.

May it help us both through this and future rounds!

The funny thing about my updates is that people keep saying they are very organized, but I usually still feel like the schoolgirl with the stack of books and papers forever on the edge of exploding!

I guess I’ve snuck into being more organized kind of sideways….

Your last line tickled me. When the kids were smaller, I often said, “Practice makes better!”

I never wanted to sell them a false bill of goods like perfection. =)
