Breaktime Blooms; June 25, 2017

Hi there!

Yes, I know. It’s the break between rounds. Days with no Round to call home – a little like a man without a country….

Some of us are a little subversive. We’re willing to keep on writing, even if this is supposed to be a break. Sometimes, I downshift – but this month, I’m in the homestretch of a challenge that has inspired and motivated me – 5o,000 words of blog post material in 30 days! I’ve learned a lot about myself, and I’ve found a way to use my blogging to enrich my personal explorations, and, at the same time, to use my personal explorations to enrich my blogging.

It’s an incredible motivational idea, based on the old adage from my days working as a waitress at the Old Faithful Inn in Yellowstone National Park (at that time and in season, the fifth busiest restaurant in the world!).

What was that adage?

“Work both ways.”

That’s quickly becoming my new model, as I move into the more businesslike aspects of building a writing career.

Do you have any clue at all what I’m talking about? =D

I think I might be getting a little ahead of myself here…so let’s get on with my Un-Round Two, Un-Round Three, Un-ROW80, update.

  • JuNoWriMo: Write 50,000 words of raw material for blog posts. ,42,931/50,000 words; less than 8K to go, and I’m starting to feel the drive to “get ’er done.” Primary goal ahead of target.
  • Play with fiction writing as/if desired. Did a snippet of new writing for next week’s upcoming WIPpet post; and a flash fiction story this week’s #SoCS post. Secondary goal on target.

  • Still Nameless (Kifo Island #8): Use a hybrid form of The Writer’s Coloring Book and The Story Toolkit to plot this novel by June 30. I’ve begun moving the worksheets into a hybrid format that will let my choose which elements to include in each future project, and work on them using my laptop rather than hard copy. Thanks for the incredible tip, Fallon! Intial Concept Sheet in progress; 569 plotting words. Primary goal in progess.
  • JuNoWriMo: Plot/outline blog posts as needed to complete the drafting goal above. Several more plotted and in early development. I probably have enough ideas to carry me past 50K, at this point. Secondary goal ahead of target.

  • Holly Lisle’s How to Revise Your Novel: Complete Lesson 3 (in progress; check beginning point) using “On Any Tuesday Night” as my WIP. Skim Lessons 4 and 5; make decision regarding how much I can reasonably take on, and set an endpoint for this month’s progress. Notes completed (82 pages; 21 scenes). Letting simmer a day or two (until plotting template is finished) then filling out the index cards to finish the lesson. Primary goal nearing completion.

Social Media:

  • Blogging: Revise/polish/package relevant blogposts in order to return to a regular blogging schedule. Designate reblogged/repurposed posts or work ahead to cover July’s schedule. Posting to par for the week thus far, with a post scheduled to post later in the week; and two more in development. Primary goal on target.

  • Other Platforms: Resume posting to my Facebook Writer page,  Instagram, and Pinterest. Complete Patreon profile and launch Secondary goal on target.

  • Continue in Twitter #writingcrew and #AllStarTrek sprints/chats regularly. Dabble in other social media (LinkedIn, Medium, Quora, Wattpad) if/as desired. Sprints Wed. AM; chat Wed-Fri. Stretch goal on target.

  • Create a writing business plan using this excellent article by Angela Ackerman  as a guide. Step 4/7 in progress. Primary goal on target.

  • Assist my Accomplice with his labeling/branding/platform/marketing (if this is scary for me; it’s completely alien to him). Printed Heaven and Hell Batch 3-4; Pequeno Diablo Batch 2, and Tropical Tickler Batches 1-2 labels; as well as some paperwork. Name selected for sauce #5: Mango Mystique; label designed and printed – all current inventory is now labeled! =D Simmering ideas for business cards (next up); signage; and social media/sales platforms. Secondary goal on target.
  • Complete Build Your Marketing Muscles class; simmer; draft an action plan to apply what I’ve learned, and experiment with early changes/additions to my currently nearly non-existent “marketing plan. Finished up all the course materials I missed during the “live” session. Simmering prior to beginning action plan. Stretch goal.

Tending goals:

  • Hometending: Spend time at least 5x/week in mindful cleaning and/or yardtending; complete all homeschool paperwork and testing; deal with subscriptions and other business that tends to get pushed aside; support other indie writers as I’m able. Mindful cleaning: 6/5 (brief sessions). Received Jeremiah’s testing supplies; Both have begun testing; and 2017-2018 Letters of Intent are in progress. Ran Twitter sprints for #JuNoWriMo.

  • Selftending: Spend time with my beloveds, friends, and myself; get at least one hour of physical activity 5x/week, and five hours of strenuous activity weekly (including Baby Steps to 5K); meditate and journal 8x/week. Meditation/journaling 3/8. Hour; 2/5; Strenuous: 45 minutes/5 hours. My activity level, and amount of sleep, are down together…something to think on,

ROW Along, or Cheer Us On!

We’re on Facebook, too!

  1. Looks like a really good week. I, too, do not like to take a break. Don’t see the reason to break my momentum. Looks like it’s working well for you.

    • Honestly, there’s little I’d rather be doing than writing. I tell the kids it’s my default position. =) Like you, I don’t want to break the momentum, or take days off from my June goals – it certainly has been a packed full month! =D

Take a chance! Type something in this box, and see what happens! =D
