Cinderella Story for #StaD May Day Twenty-Eight

Hello there, and welcome to my Story a Day May “Show My Work” post! This is where I give you a sneak peek into how I’m creating two (very short, and very different) stories, every day this May. Yep, that’s right; less than 24 hours from my first reading of the prompt to a committed story, even if I’m not quite that fast at posting them!

Ready to read?

Well then, what are we waiting for?

Story A Day May 28’s prompt is from StoryADay creator Julie Duffy .

  • Write a story with a Cinderella structure.

Main Project Premise:

  • Marilyn is thwarted by Ophelia at every turn – until she learns about Kifo Island.

Fleshing Out the Premise:

  • No matter what she tries to do, Ophelia has beaten her to it. She took her stash – well, most of it. She gives up the apartment, and they both end up in that hateful hollow house. She tries to hook up; Ophelia smashes her phone. She screams; Ophelia has noise-canceling headphones. She can’t even smoke, and all the servants are gone…but then she sees something about this island for dying people – no way her sister will follow her there!

My Favorite Bit of Imprisoned

“You don’t have any right to lock me up.”

The damned brat lifts the headphones off her ears. “You didn’t have any right to deny your baby what she needs to be healthy, or to scribble all over my home and my things. But that didn’t stop you. There doesn’t seem to be anyone else who wants to help you get better, so that just leaves me. I’m not going to let you hurt or destroy anything or anyone else – not if I can help it.”

Side Project Premise:

Standard disclaimer. I don’t own them, I don’t profit from them, but they insist on telling me their stories, so I’m sharing them with you.

  • Trip’s dual dreams – his assignment to NX-01’s engine room, and to learn more about his Vulcan Surprise Package – seemed doomed for shattering, until he gets a most unusual offer from high places.

Fleshing Out the Premise:

  • Trip has had two dreams as long as he can remember – to be an engineer on a Warp Five starship, and to get married and raise a family.

Being court-martialed for crimes he didn’t commit wasn’t on his list, and neither was betraying the woman who just might have been his Vulcan Cinderella…but when the chance comes to get a handle on things and clear his name, will Trip take it?

Favorite Bit from What’s the Catch?”

“Damn! It’s a damned vacuum, and I’m trapped! My whole future is on NX-01. Now it could all vanish. Sorry.

“Go ahead. Get mad, Trip. It’s good therapy; you’re too subdued lately.”
