Prose Sonnet for #StaD May Day Twenty-Five

Hello there, and welcome to my Story a Day May “Show My Work” post! This is where I give you a sneak peek into how I’m creating two (very short, and very different) stories, every day this May. Yep, that’s right; less than 24 hours from my first reading of the prompt to a committed story, even if I’m not quite that fast at posting them!

Ready to read?

Well then, what are we waiting for?

Story A Day May 25’s prompt is from StoryADay creator Julie Duffy.

  • Write a prose sonnet: a story 14 sentences long.

Main Project Premise:

  • Ophelia tries to resolve her misgivings through poetry.

Fleshing Out the Premise:

  • She’s got a long list of cons, and only one pro. That’s not an equation that can be balanced, because Marilyn’s need isn’t equivalent to her comfort. She needs to go deeper into herself, and maybe find some kind of peace – because she knows she’s going to stay.

I Have to Stay

I need somehow to find a way

To come to acceptance within

with the fact I’m going to stay

Here, with my sister Marilyn.

This is by far the hardest thing

I’ve ever even tried to do.
I just came for a summer fling.

A chance to see someplace new.

How was supposed I to suspect

the sister who seemed so happy

was the victim of parental neglect

or how deeply she hates me?

I’m not ready for this in any way –

But I’m all she has, I have to stay.

Side Project Premise:

Standard disclaimer. I don’t own them, I don’t profit from them, but they insist on telling me their stories, so I’m sharing them with you.

  • Trip’s future hangs in the balance – where will he be spending the next years of his life?

Fleshing Out the Premise:

  • Trip spends some time talking with Lizzie, his prospects uncertain and crushing him with the question of whether he’s going to be on that beautiful little Warp Five ship named Enterprise, or not – and then there is a call from Starfleet Command…and it brings an answer.

Word List:

  • Boot (Aussie for Trunk of car)

  • Bumper Bar

  • Duvee

  • Stretch Marks

  • Moisturiser

  • Cheesecake

  • Gherkin

  • Papiermache

  • 6ft of garden hose

  • Dungeon

  • Slime

  • the most comfortably fitting bra I have ever owned

Favorite Bit of “Don’t Point Your Gherkin”

“Don’t point your gherkin at me, Lizzie.”

“Answer the comm.”
