A Refusal for #StaD May Day Eighteen

Hello there, and welcome to my Story a Day May “Show My Work” post! This is where I give you a sneak peek into how I’m creating two (very short, and very different) stories, every day this May. Yep, that’s right; less than 24 hours from my first reading of the prompt to a committed story, even if I’m not quite that fast at posting them!

Ready to read?

Well then, what are we waiting for?

Story A Day May 18’s prompt is from StoryADay creator Julie Duffy .

The Prompt:

  • There is a moment in every story where a protagonist has to make a choice: to take up the challenge of the story or to turn away. Everything else flows from that.

  • Today, write a story in which your protagonist makes the other choice.

Main Project Premise:

  • Presented with the choice to seek treatment or continue her addictions, Marilyn refuses to be ruled by drugs any longer.

Fleshing Out the Premise:

  • When faced with the reality that her unborn daughter has no brain and can’t survive outside the womb, Marilyn feels the sting and bite of things that can’t be accepted or undone. Reality is harsh, and drugs can only let her hide, not escape. She makes the decision I wish she had made, and the first shaky steps toward a life she can truly participate in.

My Favorite Bit of Sting and Bite

“There’s nothing anyone can do to save this baby’s life, Marilyn.”

The words sting and bite with more force than a needle piercing her skin and penetrating a vein.

“Is it because of me – because of my -?” She couldn’t make herself say the words that would damn her, and the baby she carried.

“The exact causes aren’t known. However, your blood tests shows very low levels of folic acid, which is essential for the proper formation of the neural tube.”

“And what does that mean – for her?” She rubbed the protrusion of her belly, where the baby girl was growing.

Side Project Premise:

Standard disclaimer. I don’t own them, I don’t profit from them, but they insist on telling me their stories, so I’m sharing them with you.

  • Soval has knowledge that can exonerate the human male to whom his kindaughter T’Pol is awakened; he doesn’t reveal it.

Fleshing Out the Premise:

  • Soval possesses information which can exonerate Lieutenant Charles Tucker the Third from charges leveled against him. He also possesses information that strongly indicates that this human engineer is his kindaughter T’Pol’s Intended, and that she is Awakening to him. However, this matter must be carefully analyzed, and logic dictates a course of….inaction?

Word List:

  • audit

  • conical

  • architecture

  • anger

  • superstition

  • deptression

  • boomerang

  • dystopia

  • rapacious

  • degradation

  • obstinate

  • seductive

  • loyalty

Favorite Bit from Prone to Superstition

He could exonerate this man. However, a conical architecture extended from that point. If he revealed the rapacious degradation of the five humans, their obstinate anger when his kindaughter refused their seductive advances, he jeopardized his loyalty to Vulcan.
