“Monday Morning Coffee” has been with me since I was sixteen. A local boy with schizophrenia wandered away from his family at a large outdoor event. Several days later, he was found, deceased.

From that story came this one – the connection might not be clear to anyone but me – but it’s there.

Rose has just offered Jeremy a holiday gift – a twenty-dollar bill.

A Matter of Importance”

He turns his head to look at the money, then into my eyes. I notice that his hands never stop moving, as though they don’t need direction from either his eyes or his mind. “Is this a matter of importance to you, kind Rose?”

“Yes, Jeremy. It’s very important.”

“Why?” His gaze searches my face, his hands still twisting and folding, sure and certain.

How I answer matters to us both.

How will Rose answer?
What is Jeremy making?
Will he take the money?

Any guesses you’d like to share?

“Monday Morning Coffee” was originally published in the 2015 edition of World Unknown Review,  edited by L.S. Engler.  Since I retain all rights beyond first publication, I intend to revise the story and add it to my backlist-in-the-making.

    • I’m not sure why, Ed, but I often get that comment about my short stories. With "A Splash of Red," I actually had a dream that spurred the story. If I dreamed this one, I don’t remember, but the idea has been with me in varying forms for a good chunk of my life, so maybe that has something to do with it.
I really have no excuse for not replying to this comment sooner, except that I was living….and getting ready for a LOT of new writing, as I do challenges each month from April to July.
      Please accept my humble apologies!
