She Sparkles and Shines! #JusJoJan Day Five

Welcome to Day Five of Just Jot It January, where the theme is: “spangly.”

The word “spangly” carries some specific connections for me. There’s this song, for instance:

And there’s this very different one, a favorite of my teen years:

But more than either of those, “spangly” means this girl, to me.

Since before she could walk, she’s loved sparkly shoes and jewelry. Since she was two, she’s been all about the rainbow sprinkles, which, to me, are the “spangliest” of ice cream toppings. If it’s sparkly or shiny, iridescent or “holo” (her latest passion), she’s all about it.

It’s funny, because it seems so stereotypically “girl”….but there’s more to it, and to her. She’s a girl who loves nature and car repair, anatomy and camping, fishing and dinosaurs. There’s a reason I call her the Daredevil Diva. =)

It might be easy, seeing her out in public, where she tends to glitter as the “fancy daughter of a plain mother” to see that other side of her. But it’s there, and the proof is conclusive and abundant. She doesn’t need to be all of one thing or another. She’s not a label or a stereotype. She’s a girl blossoming into adolescence (she will be twelve-and-a-half this weekend). She is vast, as Walt Whitman once wrote, and she contains multitudes….and, I’m sure, more than a few spangly things are among them.

Take a chance! Type something in this box, and see what happens! =D
