Building Details: January 2017 Goals and Update

Hey there!

The first month of the new year brings my first batch of monthly goals. This is the complete list; from this point, I’ll only list those goals I engage with each session.

There’s a lot to cover, so I hope you won’t mind if I just get right to it.

My #oneword for 2017


  • Kifo Island: Write 5,000 words/week The Far Shore (KIC #6), until complete: Currently Scene 11/24 in progress, 36,792/~65,000 words. Secondary goal.


  • Rose and Jeremy novella: Plan/plot “Tuesday Afternoon Tea” using The Story Toolkit and existing notes. Develop one-paragraph sketches for remaining 3-5 stories. Primary goal. I located and reread the original prequel story and the existing notes for this sequel; will let them simmer for a day or three before attempting to add anything new. Downloaded Toolkit worksheets and skimmed the first 10/66 pages.

  • Kifo Island: Select April and July novels. Create rough AeonTimeline for first six novels/ select and place April and July novels. Secondary goal. Made rough selections for Camp novels (and a side idea for #StaD May). Rough sorted the chaotic hodgepodge of files and folders for this series, as prep for series bible/timeline and as future story fodder….Simmering All the Things. Gathered all relevant materials for the six novels either complete or currently in progress.

  • The IDIC Romance/Trueborn Warp: Begin TnT fan fiction – Enterprise/TOS crossover epic timeline; place general events. Take notes and simmer future projects during timeline creation. Tertiary goal.



  • Short Stories: “Miss Spider and Mister Fly”; Complete edits. Primary goal. Have edit request; read comments carefully; made notes. Began researching edits I’m not sure of. Expect to finish early this week; this round is due on January 31, but I don’t want the time to slip away from me. Will simmer oversleep, and revisit later today.

  • Kifo Island: Sea Changes: Continue rough revision for crit group; scenes 5-8. Secondary goal. I’ve located the hard copy that drifted out of memory over the last several months.

  • The IDIC Romance: Progress with revisions for First Contact; With Jazz Review A Backdrop of Stars 1-3 (already posted) and revise 4-7 for posting. Tertiary goal. Printed copy to use for lessons; progtressing through Lesson 1/22.

  • Work through Holly Lisle’s Revision Course (using “FC,WJ,”) first 3 lessons. Side goal. Read through intro to Lesson One, printed and read worksheets. Completed Worksheet 1A (1/3 for this week’s lesson); moving through Worksheet 1B; page 13/79 of manuscript notations in progress (through Scene Four). Began setting up revision notebook; will finish that when my new paper and sheet protectors arrive.


  • Blog Hops: Just Jot It January Write 333 word stream of consciousness vignette for each day’s topic; complete guest posting duties as assigned. #atozchallenge: Complete any loose ends and unfinished business, move all posts to blog interface. Primary goal. #JusJoJan: 3/31 complete; skimmed the rest. #atozchallenge: Week Two: B-E links added; text added to individual post files; 4/6 complete. I’ve been assigned a midmonth guest slot; awaiting further instructions.

  • Blogging Features: Resume Mindful Monday: Biweekly posts on mindfulness. Find blogging/website rhythm. Secondary goal. Mindful Monday post is up.

  • Website Development: Evaluate website page needs; make lists/basic sketches of new pages. Tertiary goal.

  • Blog/Website Interface: Begin duplicate posts on blog and two-way linking. Side goal.


  • Dark and Bitter anthology: “Miss Spider and Mister Fly”: Return edited mss to editors; follow up as needed. Primary goal.

  • A Splash of Red”: Complete final revisions and edits/polishing passes; work with Jaz on cover art; make front/back matter checklists. Secondary goal.

  • The IDIC Romance: Submit A Backdrop of Stars chapters 1-7 to fan fiction sites as completed. Tertiary goal.


  • Homeschool Administration: Gather materials for second quarter reports, due March 15. Create Flickr portfolios for this school year, for both children. Primary goal.

  • Resets/reorganizations: study, family room, and kitchen. Complete three 27 thing flings each room, each week. Bedroom, living room, and bathroom: one 27 thing fling each room each week. 27 General Hometending rounds weekly. Secondary goal. Study: 1/3; bedroom 1/1. General: 7/27.
  • Personal Administration: Clean, organize, and back up all designated fiction files. Maintain Blogging/ Homeschool directories. Sort and delete excess mail Homeschooling, and Transactions in Progress folders. Tertiary goal. Moved most of the fiction files to the main directory. Did some pantsing organization while locating and reviewing files.
  • Photo digitalization: Scan 27 travel photos per week; save in organized files with backup. Side goal. 30/27 photos selected.


  • My beloveds: One on one time with each, doing something of value to us both, each week. Primary goal. Time with Lise; canoodling; movies; sharing photos.

  • Continue planning/ attending outings (personal and family) as desired. Secondary goal. Schuyler Mansion Twelfth Night and local author event on the 7th;.Miah attending out-of-state escape room party on the 14th.

  • NNWM local group: Interact regularly, in person and online; participate actively in critique group. Tertiary goal. Read and highlighted the revision piece that’s reached the queue; simmering overnight.

  • Paying it Forward: Offer beta reading, reviews, and promotional posts for other writers. Side goal.


  • Journals six mornings and three evenings each week. Meditate five mornings and two evenings weekly. Primary goal.Morning: 3/6. New meditation video.

  • Get a cumulative total of at least 90 minutes moderate physical activity 6 days weekly, and 6 hours of more strenuous activities (tai chi, swimming, hiking, cadio, weights, etc) monthly by end of round. Secondary goal. Workout Monday: moderate: 2/6. Strenuous: 1.5/6 hours (workout/moving firewood).

  • Intuitive Eating: Create a basic plan for change. Tertiary goal.
  • Smart Change: Reread early chapters/worksheets; create an approach plan. Side goal.

Leaps of Faith:

  • Apply at Starbucks and Panera for part-time work. Skimmed Panera site; they do have two openings that interest me in my local area.

  • Go through Publication email folder; make subcategory for marketing-related posts.

  • Finish up Patreon page and post.

  • Reading: Finish listening to Alexander Hamilton audiobook; read two other books; write four reviews. Currently reading Bardwell’s Folly, by local author Sandra Hutchison, who also writes some of my favorite fan fiction, and whom I will be meeting at an event this Saturday. We’ve been corresponding for several months now, so I’m excited, and the book is excellent. 49% complete; 1 /2 in progress.

  1. I’ll be curious to hear how you like Holly Lisle’s revision course. I might need to look into something similar someday soon. Revision can really trip me up creatively!

    Good luck in 2017! You have an awesome and eclectic list of goals. 🙂

    And I may have something for you to add to your beta reading next month(or possible March) 🙂

      • Haha. I still have to do the Story Toolkit for it and outline new scenes, but I should be able to add it to the writing list before the end of the month. Also, you should have an octopus headed your way soon(I put it and a bonus surprise in the mail this morning).
