So, have you ever had life do a quick-change on you at what might be the best and worst of times?
My Accomplice was fired from his job on Monday. He took this job several weeks ago, with high hopes. He was working a lot; the kitchen was clean and far better equipped than the one where he’d worked miracles for nine years. The owners were friendly, and, although the starting pay was lower than he’d hoped, he was promised a rapid promotion and raise once his probation was over.
The problems started to poke through the shiny exterior, but we’d gone through the bulk of our savings during his previous unemployment. He was determined to stay, and do his best, until he had a better opportunity.
But I can’t say I’m glad he’s not there anymore. Yes, it’s going to make finances very uncertain at a time of year when a little extra would be most welcome. But we’re lucky – we own our home, and our elderly vehicles, outright. Our kids are both old enough to understand financial reality, and it helps that we’ve been very open about our expenses since they were very small.
More than that. Going from what he thought would be a dream job filled with new learning and the chance to excel to something much less appealing was affecting his happiness and stress levels. Financial lean times are better than that, to me – to all of us. We like our family happy; we’re rich in so many ways that will never pad a bank account.
Some things mean more than money…
What means more than money to you?
