We’re nearing the end of August. Tuesday is my nineteenth wedding anniversary. With budgetary concerns, we’re planning a very low-budget mutual treat – maybe a box of our favorite hazelnut chocolates.
What’s more important is reflecting on the years of our partnership, considering where we started, where we are, and where we’d like to go from here. That’s becoming more of a consideration as our children grow into and through their teen years. The time is getting closer when it will just be the two of us again, the way it was for the first four years of our union.
That will be a different life, and we both have ideas – separately, and together.
During this session, I spent a bit more time away from my writing. I needed a more restful spell after finishing up some major administrative projects earlier in the week. So I spent some time playing Cake Mania 3 and Spider Solitaire, finishing up the beta read I’ve been doing, and rereading my own fan fiction, as I shift into the earliest phases of planning for a more involved writing month in September. I took my daughter to a game night at a local homeschool community center we’re joining.
Sometimes, I need the rest, and the time to percolate. I do feel ideas starting to coalesce, bit by bit. But the well is refilling rather than fully replenished, so I may continue to spend more time on administrative details and preparations than on actual writing for another few days, or even the rest of the month.
I’ve learned that when I go with these flows, I’m ultimately more productive, and definitely happier and less stressed. More than that, I tend to details I usually set aside when I’m immersed in story worlds, so, in a sense, I’m laying the foundation and setting the stage…because, if there’s one thing I know for sure, it’s that the words will come.
How about you?
Are you a consistent writer, or do you find there are times when you tend more to other things?
Do you feel guilty, or grateful, when that happens?
