Inflexibility Proof: April 24, 2016

Hey there, ROWers and others!

Have you ever realized that you were getting in your own way, because you had an idea in your head of The Way It Should Be, and the reality wasn’t matching that mental image?

What did you do about it?

That’s where I am. At my last update, I mentioned that I’d decided to count my fan fiction revision and drafting words in my CampNaNoWriMo totals. Why? Because that writing is helping me with two major 2016 objectives – submitting and revision – and that’s as important, at least, as drafting new novels (I already have so many drafted, I’ve lost count!)

The last few days, I’ve had another revelation. I was assuming I had to post those vignettes I wrote, and expand them everyday, but there’s an easier, more streamlined approach. It’s hard to describe, here, but it’s a WINNER of an idea, and, for the first time since the round began, I have a post scheduled and story posted at – a day ahead, no less! I might even be able to get through this last week two or three days ahead, which is amazing!

  • Draft A Rising Tide (Kifo Island Chronicles #4) for CampNaNoWriMo. Scene 11/24 in progress; 21,429/~65,000 words. Nothing new; consumed by fanfic.

  • Write or adapt remaining A-Z Boldly Go expansion stories. Moving along here; Trip and T’Pol have lots to say, and they aren’t the shy, retiring type. 21/26;A- U posted; ideas for V simmering.

  • The IDIC Romance: Complete plot/pinch points for 26 stories stories, as needed to complete writing goal above. I’m deciding on a case by case basis as I go. Through U, if I choose to use them; 21/26 complete.

  • Star Trek Enterprise: Watch episodes and clips needed to complete A-Z Challenge posts. #itswritingresearch – Watched Bound , Demons”, “Terra Prime”, and Home” for research. Referenced transcripts.

  • Keep eyes open; plan Story A Day May Kifo Island stories, purchase ebook if available before month’s end. Read 5/5 existing character sketches for two new novels (The Xavier/Yvette/Zeke one may be “Tsunamis”; the Ubunta/Quincette/Aneesha one may be “The Far Shore”). Rough notes completed for Week One stories: 14/31 in progress. Not sure how much detail I want in the planning; this may be enough.

  • Complete revisions for “Peach Liqueur Love”.
  • The IDIC Romance: Revisions as needed to complete writing goal above. Currently complete through U; 21/26 complete.

Blogging/Social Media:

  • Answer blog comments and make visits, at least every other day. Daily, excepting Saturday, due to lots of outside the house activity.

  • ROW80: Keep visits and updates current; draft, revise, and submit Round Two Sponsor Post. I am finally caught up; sorry that took so long!

  • Blogging From A-Z: Complete all Minioning duties in a timely manner. Nearly caught up.

  • Maintain email at below 333 messages; making good use of folders. Still managing this one easily.

  • Answer story comments at least twice weekly. 1/2. Not all, but some. That’s a focus for this week.

  • Homeschool Administration: Complete all pending paperwork. More resources gathered. Letter to district re: LOI sent; reply received; response drafted.
  • Continue decluttering/beautification projects; in home and/or yard, five days weekly. Continue making improvements to our home and our quality of life. General maintenance; organization; decluttering. 5/5. Good cleaning day Wednesday; front rooms; laundry; dishes; bathroom.
  • Go through all online subscriptions; cancel those we no longer need; at least one each week.

  • Continue planning/ attending outings (personal and family) as desired. Lise sleepover; swimming with Miah.

  • NNWM local group: Attend write-ins regularly, and check in on the Facebook group as inspired, submit “Peach Liqueur Love”, and critique as possible for our small crit group. Write in at Denny’s. I’ll resume critques later today.
  • My beloveds: One on one time with each, doing something of value to us both, each week. Snuggles, conversations, shopping, playground; swimming, chauffering; ordering Miah’s computer; shared lunch; shopping.
  • Complete 1 pending book review. That would be the excellent Slave Again by Alana Terry. One will break the ice, and, by gosh, this is the week to get ‘er done!

  • Write in Abundance, Intentions, and #onegoodcup journals seven times each week. Meditate seven times weekly. Explore one new meditative practice. Journaling 5/7; meditation: 8/7. Missed Tuesday and Thursday; not much sleep and early plans.

  • Tai chi practice: One class and one at-home practice each week.

  • Swim twice, at least 500 meters (10 complete laps at Y pool). Took my Gigantiboy swimming while his sister is away. 1 /2.

  • Focus on sprints of activity daily (hometending, dancing, tai chi, walking, whatever), and more strenuous activities I enjoy, like swimming and hiking, twice monthly. Hometending sprints; 2/2 strenuous; swimming.
  • Read: Smart Change and Gift From the Sea.

Leaps of Faith:

  • Fan fiction stuff: Offer 26 stories at 26 /26 stories/chapters (I may have gotten delightfully carried away...)

  • Initial beta reading of Stained by Ashes. Not sure I can get to this during April, which is why it’s here.

  • Play with website building. Brief exploration of Weebly’s site.

  • 2016 Story A Day Prompts: Complete readthrough of book; mark typos; send back; draft review materials (Amazon and blog post); have all completed before April 23 (launch date). Heard back from author; no way to send comments on Kindle. Pre-draft review notes completed. Review posted to Amazon; blog post pending today or tomorrow.

  • New: Read both candidates’ websites prior to Tuesday’s New York primary.

  • New: Use standing desk one work session 3 days per week. 1/3.

The Writing Challenge That Knows You Have a Life!

See other participants’ goals updates here!

  1. You have a standing desk set-up too? *envy, envy* (Okay, so envy is silly, but then I was trying for that effect)

It’s always good to look step back and reassess things on occasion. Not all the time… we can gather wool another day–for now there are words to write! But, yeah, once in a while. And it looks like the progress keeps flowing along.

Hooray for the evening of micro-sprints!

    • I bought it a couple of months ago. It was about $65 on Amazon, delivered. Worth it!

I’m getting better at assessing on the fly. Unschooling disposes me to a wide-angle life. Another one of those benefits I didn’t expect, but am really happy about. =D

It’s still going to be a scramble to make that word count goal, if I do, but I will have made so much progress in other areas, it really doesn’t matter – especially when I have somewhere between 8-12 drafted novels awaiting revision, already!

Today’s been 11:11 sprints, and I’m making some great forward progress in several areas. =)

      • Forward progress is awesome no matter where it comes from.

No call about a kitten yet. Dan’s been dealing with a bunch of work-related calls today and I needed to keep the phone free. Hoping tomorrow (sorry, Lise, but job and paycheck-related stuff got cray-cray here today). On another sidenote though… Thinking of bringing Marcus to Java’s for writing tomorrow night after all (he doesn’t get many chances and this is school break week). If Lise was interested in coming, is there anything he should bring with him?

          • The work stuff is STILL going on right now… Dan just came in to talk about something from the last phone call. Sorry they won’t be getting together, but in a way that helps us. I won’t bother trying to Java’s tomorrow probably… easier on the budget (Java’s is kind of brutal on the wallet with all the extras). We can do something closer to home and family.

  2. It’s always good to get out of your own way. I don’t always do it, but figuring out the way to do that. For me, it seems to be not forcing myself to work my way through one thing at a time. Being able to bounce around seems to work better for me. Looks like you have lots of green there, so that’s good.

    • My mind needs to bounce, too. Sometimes, I need micro-bursts, others deep focus on one thing, and usually something in between, depending on the circumstances.

This weekend was a busy one, so it was “do what fits with my time, energy, and focus.”

      Boldly Going Through the Alphabet!
      Part-Time Minion for Holton’s Heroes
      shanjeniah’s Lovely Chaos

Take a chance! Type something in this box, and see what happens! =D
