Welcome to WIPpet Wednesday, a weekly blog hop which encourages writers to move WIPs (works-in-progress) to publication by posting excerpts related to the date. We’re led by the capable fingers and nimble mind of Emily Witt.
Happy Wednesday once again!
Last week, my Accomplice was just returning to work after vacation, and I shared the first snippet from Donovan Nash in Sea Changes. Donovan is definitely one of my more intriguing Kifo Island characters. He had a major supporting role in both of my previously drafted Kifo stories. Now, he gets his own story (well, shared with Karina, and maybe someone else, but still, he’s finally the star he was always meant to be!)
It’s been a busy week, and my anticipated return to routine made way for a birthday party, a doctor’s appointment, and registering for the annual tribal immersion that is Unschoolers Rock the Campground.
For those who’ve forgotten, or are new here, the premise:
In advocating for a dying girl seeking emancipation from controlling parents, can an overburdened young woman and a lonely young man find a future together?
This passage is NaNo rough. My plan is to begin creating a revision plan this month or next. That said, any input is gratefully accepted!
- Today is March 9, 2016
- I‘ve got the next nine sentences of Donovan’s story today.
Context: Donovan has just met Karina Karanova, who was in a state of emotional overload. Donovan has another obligation, and we reconnect with him as he prepares to undertake it.
Like Small Wounded Birds
Her hands had trembled when he held them, like small wounded birds half-trying to flutter away.
“Be here, now.”
Inside, Ava Garcia waited. Donovan knew nothing about her; he’d always found it best to meet a potential client first, and not read the dossier that would, by necessity, have him forming impressions and opinions that would be as two-dimensional as the pages it had been printed on.
“Be here, now.” One last time, and attention to his breathing. Three deep breaths, in and out, to give him something of what he felt each dawn and twilight, when he meditated.
Calmer, encased in a porous bubble of presence, Donovan left the protection of the cart’s sun canopy, and moved briskly forward – sun hats and dark umbrellas were no match for the sun, if he lingered.
Fortunately, there was a jasmine-vined pergola over the front entrance he’d been directed to, and he could stand in its welcome shade while he rang the chime.
Where is Donovan?
Why is he here?
Will he be able to set his thoughts of Karina aside?
Can he be here, now?
Who is Ava Garcia?
Some of these questions may be answered – and others will certainly be posed- next week, so be sure to come back then to learn more of Donovan’s story.
