How do you know that you’re a writer?

No, I don’t mean just that you write, so, obviously, you’re a writer. I don’t mean all the drifts and banks and tides of words you create. I’m not even talking about the things that you’ve published.

I’m talking about those moments when you know, deep down, that you’re doing something most people wouldn’t be doing, in a way they might not be doing it – purely for the sake of your current project.

Like staying up all night writing, and then, at 6am, losing myself in researching absinthe. No, I’m not looking to start experimenting with this fascinating alcoholic beverage Despite my intrigue, it contains both anise  and fennel – and I strongly dislike those flavors.

But my main character does experiment – and then absinthe becomes a moving force in his life.

And so, there I was, learning about the composition of absinthe, its effects (known and rumored), the ritual of preparation and variants of that, its history, and the equipment used to perform the ritual…

Including those beautiful spoons…yes, I’m swooning for those spoons! They led me to the thought that the spoons used in my character’s version of the absinthe ritual might be symbolic-

Which meant that at 7am, I was researching thistles…

And that is how I know I’m a writer! How about you?

  • Complete rough draft of The Earth Doth Move (NaNo 2014). (adapting goal)

  • All fitness and nutrition goals.

  • Maintain blogging goals.

Maintain email Inbox at a manageable level (below 333 for November, due to NaNo).

  • Still well under my comfort level, definitely slowed down as the writing steps up.

Continue using calendar app to manage my time.

  • Reviewed and adapted November blogging plans.

2014 Lifetending:

Return to exploring Play Jar slips in a playful, FUN way!

  • Two slips outstanding.

2014 Fitness:

  • At least one strenuous home/yardtending activity each week.
  • Dance, swim, or play physically with kids at least once each week.

2014 Nutrition:

  • Drink one glass/bottle of water each day.

Maintain existing nutrition goals ( soup;yogurt; nuts; grains).

  • 2/2 Greek yogurt.

  • 3/ 2 nuts (sea salted cashews; salted almonds).

  • 4/3 grain (whole grain bread; corn flakes; corn taco shells; whole wheat wrap).

Eat fresh vegetables other than salads (raw or cooked), and/or fresh fruits at least 3 times each week.

  • 5/3; sub with veggies; veggie/shrimp tacos; clementine; snap peas; veggie wrap.

2014 Blogging:

Build positive blogging habits – post regularly, answer comments, and share diversely.

  • Sharing hasn’t been great, and this post is late. I’ve been writing, writing, writing!

2014 Writing:

Complete first draft of The Earth Doth Move, as my November NaNo project.

  • Current Chapter: 8/20

  • Current Scene: 30/60

  • Word Count: 105,729/~125,000

  • New Words: 31,194!

  • New Pages: 58!

2014 Hometending:

  • Continue cleaning and organizing my study.

2014 Lifetending:

Read 2 of the 8 TBR books on the bookcase by my bed.

Continue my FutureLearn class, Exploring Play, until finished.

  • Still at 37% complete. Week 3/7. Nothing new this time…writing.

2014 Fitness:

Plan at least two monthly excursions that promote physical activity.

  • 1/ 2 excursions complete.
  • Second excursion planned for Monday.

Use Wii Fit at least 3 days weekly, for a minimum of ten minutes.

  • Friday: 10 minutes.
  • 2/3 sessions.
  • Weekly workout at the Y;4 weight-bearing exercises/machines for arms/legs/core weekly.
  • Treadmill: 18 minute mile, walking/jogging; using “Rolling Hills” Program.
  • Build to one half mile walking/jogging on the track each week.
  • Recumbent bike: 8 miles in 30 minutes, using an interval program.
  • Add time on elliptical, arc trainer, and/or rowing machines: goal is 10 minutes on each, at least twice monthly.

2014 Nutrition:

Maintain existing nutrition goals (smoothies/salads).

  • 3/5; all salads.

  • Take time at least once a week to simply be in my study.

  • Maintain or reduce body weight – monthly checks.

  1. Great work on your goals this week! I know I’m a writer because my characters have become so ingrained into my life that sometimes I forget that they’re not real people and no one else knows who I’m talking about!
