Hello, and welcome to OctPoWriMo, Day Seven!

What’s OctPoWriMo, you ask? Well, it’s a whole month of poetic creation – 31 poems in 31 days. It’s the creative baby of Morgan Dragonwillow and Julie Jordan Scott.

This year, I intend to follow all the prompts, and get the joy of discovery…

I hope you’ll stop by, settle in, and find a little bit of magic here!

Today’s prompt is silence, and included a task prompt (be in silence for five minutes, and write), an image prompt, which appears at the end of this post, and a quote prompt, below.

Quote inspiration:

Silence introduced in a society that worships noise is like the Moon exposing the night. Behind darkness is our fear. Within silence our voice dwells. What is required from both is that we be still. We focus. We listen. We see and we hear. The unexpected emerges.”

Terry Tempest Williams

I wasn’t sure exactly what direction this poem was going to take. I let the idea of silence sit in my mind while I drove to the YMCA for my workout, and it was still simmering when I headed home.

And then, as I approached a traffic light at the top of a hill – and there was the moon, so huge and unexpected and lovely that my breath caught –

And a poem was born…

Silence Within

Driving home

At the hill’s crest

Breath caught and stopped.

Amidst noise, all silent-still

Within me.

Full Hunter’s Moon

Suspended silver in fading sky-

Inner silence, moment of wonder

Moon-magic defeats time

Catches me in

A breath

Silent pause

Breath-threshold, life and death

Or half-breathed and snared

Undone by lover’s caress.

Silence fractures

Or heals

A restless spirit

To consider

Matters of soul and truth

That slip through and beneath

the surfaces of life.

Silence comes

Claims me –

While children laugh,

Water flows, wind howls

Engines grind, music plays on

Rich and deep silence

Textured, layered

Needing nothing

But my own attention

The silent gift pregnant

Filled with the possible

Given to myself.

In silence.
