WIPpet Wednesday: Intimate Contact

Welcome to WIPpet Wednesday, a weekly blog hop which encourages writers to move WIPs (works-in-progress) to publication by posting excerpts related to the date. It is hosted by the lovely K.L. Schwengel, maven of bad boys, stock dogs, and flying monkeys!

Today’s snippet comes from The IDIC Romance, my Story A Day May Challenge: Star Trek: Enterprise fan fiction, an exploration of the interspecies relationship of T’Pol and Trip. I’ll be sharing the remainder of this story, and a Twitter fiction, before we give Trip and T’Pol some much-needed privacy.

Disclaimer: T’Pol, Trip, and all the rest of Star Trek are property of CBS/Paramount; no copyright infringement intended. I just want to play with them, and I’m careful!

Story a Day is just that- a story every day in May. To make the challenge more interesting, I used all of the prompts offered throughout the month. The stories are sequential, with various tones, POVs, and voices.

For those keeping track:

This is the eighth installment of Story #4, “Tigress T’Pol” . The prompt was to write a story of exactly 2000 words. An additional guest prompt from Heidi Durrow invited us to explore passion in this story.

WIPpet Math:

  • Today is August 27, 2014.
  • 28 sentences, because they fit, and I like you. =)

This snippet follows immediately after last week’s WIPpet, When the Limb Breaks. Trip and T’Pol deal with the aftermath of their unexpected intimate contact…

This is an add-on scene for the pilot episode: “Broken Bow Part 1”. Ive done my best to extrapolate without violating series canon.

The beginning of this fan video has clips from Rigel 10, right before Trip and T’Pol land in that cell, and T’Pol slamming Trip into a shower wall, and lots of other tidbits that aren’t too spoilery – with a song that seem very apt for these two intrepid but flummoxed explorers! (Bits from all seasons, beginning with “Broken Bow”, Season 1).

I lifted my arms halfway, offering her the chance to come back, and hoping like hell that she would. “Hey, I don’t remember complaining. Feel free to have all the lapses of control you want, with me, if they’re all like that.” I just knew I was grinning like a fool – whatever that plasma-fire thing was, it beat just kissing all to hell, and I wanted more of it.

I was willing to bet that T’Pol did, too – but she backed away the five steps or so to the other corner, watching me the whole time, as though maybe she thought I couldn’t control myself. I bit my tongue hard enough to get my mind off other parts of me and wondered what the hell I was supposed to do now. Far as I knew, Starfleet didn’t have any protocols for how to handle the aftermath of a scorching kiss with a sexy Vulcan scientist. And then I remembered my wiseass comment about her not warning us about drinking the water, and that she’d cautioned us against ‘intimate contact’ in that neutral voice of hers, and I started to laugh at the absurdity of the mess we were in.

“Trip -” T’Pol cut herself off, like maybe she didn’t know what she wanted to say. Was she as confused as I was? She was still watching me while not quite making eye contact. I wiped my mouth to stop my laughter, still tasting and smelling her – damn, she’d felt so good, so right, pressed up against me, forgetting herself…wrong direction, Tucker, and the lady’s waiting for you to answer…

“Yeah, T’Pol?”

For a few breaths, she only stood with her back pressed into the corner, as though maybe she needed the support, and I thought again about that blow to the head she’d taken, and started to feel like maybe I’d taken advantage of her. When she finally spoke again, her voice was little more than a whisper. “On the night we first – encountered – one another, I left the compound without authorization. It was a serious breach of protocol.” Something in her manner said that breaches of protocol were dangerous stuff, at the Vulcan consulate.

“You mean, they just expect you to stay inside, and you’d be in trouble for sitting in a jazz club for – what was it, like ten minutes?” I acted like I didn’t know exactly how long she’d been there – twelve minute, sixteen seconds.

I had no business to attend to outside of the consulate, and we were -strongly encouraged – to avoid unnecessary contact with humans. I acted – impulsively.”

“We never touched or even said a word to each other.” I didn’t mention all the things I’d imagined doing with her, while I was trying to pretend I wasn’t watching her.

“That’s no longer true.” Her voice was flat, but she finally looked into my eyes, as though she understood the tangle of desire, humor, and awkwardness better than I ever would’ve thought a Vulcan could. “Trip, I, too, was warned against intimate contact with alien species.”

What’s next for our slightly naughty but highly entertaining pair? Will they throw caution and protocol to the wind? Will they be found out? Will they rot in that cell?!

Hopefully, this video, out of context, isn’t too spoilery…but it does really show the interplay between these two…and this time, Trip has the upper – uh, lips? =) (From “Bound”, Season 4)

You guessed it – you can watch the episode, click the links below, or come back next week for the conclusion of this story!

Story A Day excerpt and commentary…

Full original version of the story…

These posts are the seeds of a project I’m expanding in 2015. Your input is valuable. No need to feel shy; I’m a friendly sort, and will keep my phase pistol on stun… for the most part. 😉

Let’s just say that smoking, time travel, this guy, and possibly other things, make T’Pol powerfully cranky….and leave it at that, for now. (From “Carpenter Street”, Season 3).

  1. Eek! I remember watching Star Trek: Enterprise, but I do NOT remember these characters. Was this while Kirk was Captain, or with Picard? I watched it with Picard.

Either way, great tension and dynamic you capture between for these forbidden lovers!

    • Star Trek: Enterprise is a separate series, based on the first Warp 5, deep space starship, the prototype Enterprise NX-01.

It’s set from 2151-2161, so a century before Kirk’s captaincy, and 200 years before Picard’s. Starfleet exists, but there is no Federation of Planets, yet, no Prime Directive, and a lot less support.

Jonathan Archer, the son of the Warp 5 engine’s inventor, Henry Archer, is the captain. T’Pol is the Vulcan chaperone (some say spy) assigned to Enterprise for one 8 day mission, but who decided to stay (she has her reasons, and they involve Charles “Trip” Tucker III, the Chief Engineer.

I’m not sure that either Trip or T’Pol are exactly forbidden to be together as much as no one really ever thought it could happen. At this point in their history, there is a strong and possibly valid mistrust between humans and Vulcans.

It’s going to take some time for these two to get things figured out- and they’ll make more than a few mistakes along the way…

Enterprise has become my favorite incarnation of Trek. If you’re interested in watching, both Netflix and Amazon Prime have it available for streaming. =D

    • I know what you mean about enjoying these two. I’m having a blast with them (although I might wish they’d give me just a leetle break every now and again….nah!).

Trip might be the easiest male character I’ve ever written. He’s deep, but not in a complicated way, if that makes sense. He’s so straightforward in the series that I don’t have any trouble climbing inside his skin, Of the two of them, T’Pol is trickier, because I have to adjust to a Vulcan mindset and lifeview…and, well, I may love Vulcans, but I don’t think like one! =D

One of my 2015 goals is to find the right fan fiction home for my Trek stories, and begin posting them so you CAN all read more! =D

  2. You’ve given a great sense of the confusion both of them are feeling in this aftermath. I love that Trip is grinning widely in spite of it, though, at least at first. Feels very in character for him.

    • Thanks. Trip seems to be a huge living grin sometimes – utterly irrepressible! I think that’s very confusing, and quite possibly hugely intriguing, to T’Pol. She’s not evolved to easily interpret types or reasons for smiling, after all. It’s going to have to be a learned skill, if she acquires it.

  3. Dang you, woman, you’re making me ship T’Pol/Trip with these vids and snippets! I love me some sexual tension. I especially like how you set off certain phrases with dashes to emulate T’Pol’s manner of speaking. It really worked well! Brava!

    • *laughs evil laugh*

Ooh, I love bringing new sheep into the fold! OK, really, there’s nothing evil about it- these two are just so very much fun, I can’t help myself!

The tension they’ve definitely got! It’s delicious, and Jolene Blalock and Connor Trinneer make it easy to write, because their portrayals of this long dance between TnT is so flawless, straight through. I also have to give kudos to the writers for many brilliant scenes where the tension was more implied than expressed openly, and to the directors and film crews for all the subtle hints, which slowly evolved as the series went on.

Something Enterprise did better than any show I can think of, and definitely any other Trek series, as far as I can see, is to leave certain things unsaid, unexplained, so that, when they finally came to a head, the shock was extremely potent. Season 3 has maybe the best example of this, over 15 episodes or so, but it was part of the series right from the outset, and it’s brilliant.

If your shipping, and I’m not fast enough for you, you might enjoy this:

All kinds of good, bad, and some downright ugly in there! Not that I’ve spent any obsessive energy – ummm, RESEARCH TIME – there, or anything….

*sticks tongue in cheek, Trip-style, and saunters away….*

    • Oh, dang…I sauntered too soon!

T’Pol is so fluent in English, but she has certain – difficulties – with expressing certain things. She’s rather bewildered and hugely out of her element here. Vulcan society has no protocol for what she’s feeling, or for what Trip is.

I think she’s more than a little shocked by her own instinctive response, and I know that she’s shared more than she intended to (although not nearly as much as she wanted to…). Maybe she could regain her equilibrium if she could meditate, but I don’t think that’s very likely while she’s in close quarters with this human who stirs up such powerful emotions and impulses…

I could almost feel sorry for her, except she gets to have this time with Trip, and I think the confusion is ultimately going to be very good for her…

    • I’m so glad that people ae enjoying reading it, because I had a blast writing it, and revising it in these little chunks,is, if possible, even more fun as TnT reveal more about themselves…

I may just have to watch me some Enterprise today! ❤

    • He really, REALLY does. =) I don’t think T’Pol really has any idea yet exactly how hard he’s trying!

Hang in there, Trip. The lady does seem to be interested…even if sh can’t just come out and say so, and even if she’s got secrets…

  4. I love it! The tension between them is great. His internal dialog is fantastic. Will we get to see inside her head again too?

    • Trip is SO MUCH fun to write – and to watch. I kinda love him (not for me, but for T’Pol!). Connor Trinneer did an amazing job bringing him to vivid, vibrant, aw-shucks life.

And, yes, we’ll get back inside T’Pol’s head – eventually. After this story, there’s a Twitter fiction from her POV…and then I’m going to share a scene from Chameleon’s Dish, and, during that time, I’ll be expanding that Twitter bit into a full-fledged story – likely the decon scene, from both their POVs…

My plan right now is to hop back and forth between IDIC and Chameleon, and to be revising/ adding new IDIC stories in the spaces between. The original 31 stories were written and revised in a day apiece, and there’s so much I can do with them!

I’m also planning to make finding them the right online home a major focus for 2015, so there will be more concentrated doses of the Trip/T’Pol yum available…eventually! =)

  5. Very nice interplay. What a situation to be in! “Here. Let’s take a couple of folks who are forbidden to love each other and make them hang out, more or less unsupervised, in a cell for an indeterminate amount of time.” 😛

    • And the funny thing is that the Captain doesn’t have a clue what’s going on between his usually-feuding second and third in command…

I’m not sure ‘love’ is in this equation, at the moment. But ‘lust’, ‘intrigue’, ‘fascination’…definitely those…and, of course, I’m not even sure T’Pol would be anything but confused by the nebulous concept of human love…

But, yeah…these two in a cell is a recipe for all kinds of delicious trouble! =)

        • Umm, no. As I envision it, the Awakening is the beginning of telerotic capacity – the ability to form a lifebond with another (expected to be the person chosen for them in childhood, when their minds were joined in a child’s version of the adult bond.). There are telepathic, emotionally empathic, and sexual aspects to this bond.

T’Pol was intended to Awaken to Koss, but Trip triggered the response first (maybe a reason why the Vulcan consulate didn’t want her leaving the compound; this might be a risk for unbonded Vulcans, but I’m not sure yet.).

Once Awakened to Trip, though, she’s not going to be able to focus wholly on anyone else. Not that she couldn’t marry Koss, or have another relationship, but Trip becomes her ideal, the man she’ll measure others against.

It’s not very logical, the Awakening – I think it’s part of pon farr, the intense and irrational mating cycle. Awakening is the first stage, the point at which a couple will start to draw nearer to one another, for several years, so that they’ll learn one another, and be fairly well Attuned to one another before the mating cycle commences and they need each other to live.

I don’t think T’Pol is fully aware of what’s happening, or the magnitude of it, and, of course, all Trip knows, at this point, is that he’s powerfully attracted to her, and can’t seem to get enough – even when she’s being impossibly Vulcan and he wants to shove her out an airlock.

So, at this point, it’s maybe more a potential and distant love for Trip, and something Vulcan and possibly too private to have a name for T’Pol, something she can’t fully understand yet, but something that she conveyed to Trip when their fingertips touched.

I’m not sure if that clears things up, or confuses them more. =)

I AM sure I love the word ‘thingumy’!

          • Oh, yes. With no protocols for dating or relationship-building outside of her assigned betrothed, EVERYTHING about this is new to her (and it’s not like she’s going to tell TRIP that, so he understands her erratic responses as she feels her way through when she’s much more use to thinking…

    • If Trip thinks HE’s confused…! I – almost – feel sorry for T’Pol. This human came into her life, and the foundations of her reality shifted…that’s a lot to deal with, even without human illogic and having broken protocol…

And THEN he kisses her, and she dares to respond…

Oh, yeah, she’s more shook up than she’s ever likely to admit…

    • I think it’s maybe a lot easier when I’ve had Trip and T’Pol living out scenes in my head for a year! =)

It’s also possible that I watch a *LOT* of Enterprise. My husband and children might say so. It’s possible I’ve read a huge amount of fanfic at TripT’Polers.com – the good, the bad, the perfect and the you’ve gotta be kiddin’ me….

It’s possible I talk lots about Trip and T’Pol, and think about them even more. It’s also possible that I often pause an episode and play back key tiny bits of dialogue, body language, and action repeatedly, until I start to feel the deeper story…

      It’s all possible….

Mostly, though, I just love them, and want their story to be deeper and more textured than the series revealed…

As for the waiting…in 2015, I plan to find a fanfic home for these online, and I’ll begin sharing them there…so you’ll have less of a wait, after a while….

  6. Great excerpt Shan. I loved the sexual tension between them, how they want to say how they really feel but can’t. I thought the characterisation was very good, how you got inside Trip’s mind. Good stuff! 🙂

    • Thanks, Elaine. Trip basically pulls me into his cute blonde head, and tells me jokes until I’m entertained…

And then he goes on and on about this infuriating, intriguing Vulcan woman who drives him crazy in all kinds of ways….

Easy as pecan pie (which will make more sense if you watch the series, or when I get far enough).

I think what makes them so fascinating to me is that they’ve got all KINDS of sexual tension, but there’s so much MORE going on between them than that. So much of it happens in these little moments alone, too…and, for the most part, for a long time, the rest of the crew really seems to not really notice this huge elemental pull between them…

  7. I love what you’ve done with these characters. I have to admit I’m on pins and needles waiting for the next installment… please say there will be another one? Or two? Or, just, I don’t know… keep ’em coming! Great job! 🙂

    • Funny story….there was going to be one more from this story, to wrap it up, and then a Twitter fiction from T’Pol’s POX before I shifted to my Shakespearean London time travel WIP.

But, endings….I had to edit what I had, which I chopped short to meet the 2000 word length limit imposed by the prompt.

And I ended up with a far better ending, and about 1500 new words…

So, yes, there will be a few more before I go back to Chameleon’s Dish, and then I think I will be alternating scenes of that with stories from IDIC for a while…

I love the positive response these two are getting across the board. They seem to have transcended Trek fandom and gone mainstream! I love it, because I get to share them, and they are soooo much fun to write! =D

    • I thought Trip’s POV was going to be hard to write, but he’s a pretty straightforward guy with a clear voice. Once I started to get the hang of him, he just kinda took over. And, yeah, the tension was there, between these two, from their very first scene. I’ve had a lot of fun with the backstory for that (that they had a chance encounter 14 months before she was assigned to Enterprise).

I’d like to say I created it- but the truth is, these two just kept popping into my head, almost from the time I started watching the series in 2013, and they would not go away, even though I made them wait until May.

And they’re still gibing me scenes. and wriggling into my TOS fanfic, so that now it’s crossover, I guess…

But please don’t think I’m complaining, because I’m not. I adore these two, and they make it so durned EASY to play with them! ❤

      • I love it when characters follows us around and don’t let up until we give them a voice! It sounds like you’ve had lots of fun and they are certainly fun to read. I love the pair too 🙂

        • That’s these two to a T! I must tell their stories (and they still don’t let up, cause they’re stubborn!).

I’m watching season 2, now, for clues. Cute scenes in “Horizon”…T’Pol is in rare form here, and Trip doesn’t quite seem to know what to do…but he somehow manages to take a sorta step forward…I think… =)

          • Me too!

I had about 67 thousand words at the end of Story A Day May. I’ll be sharing some as WIPpets, and more at a fan fiction sight. They also play supporting roles in some of my TOS fan fiction.

They’ve kinda taken over. I have all manner of new plotlines and scene chains bubbling in my head…

There’s going to be much, much more! And every bit will be free! =D

          • Star Trek has been an incredible gift to me for most of my life. I can’t imagine charging people for it – that feels wrong on many levels!

However, if they come to read my Trek stuff, and then want to read the other half of the duology, I’ll have no problem accepting a modest amount of their money for that! =D

    • These two were playing out scenes in my head FOR A YEAR before I gave them space to play for a month. It wasn’t enough for them, though…

I take my Star Trek, and especially my two favorite Vulcans, very seriously…I give it just as much attention as I do my purely original stuff. I will never charge money for it, because I’ve already gotten so much from it.

I’ve been writing Trek fanfic since I was 13, but only discovered Enterprise in 2013. I am utterly besotted with T’Pol and Trip, and I love sharing them!

Take a chance! Type something in this box, and see what happens! =D
