#ROW80 Update 1/27/13

Leaping Faith: My ROW80 Round One Update, 1/27/13:

Post-first evaluation goals

  • Goals on target or completed are noted as such.

  • Major goals appear in bolded blue.

  • Minor goals appear in bolded black.

  • Bolded black or blue italics denote time frames for completion.

Creating:

WIP Novels:

Complete rough draft of Sima Garo Provides. Aim for 2 scenes each week (~3000 words), and notes for each scene.

  • I completed Chapter Twelve, Scene Two(1343 words;1 hour, 23 minutes).

  • I completed notes for Chapter Twelve, Scene Three (33 minutes).

  • I completed Chapter Twelve, Scene Three (1514 words; 2 hours, 9 minutes).

  • Goal completed for this week.

Read through Chameleon’s Dish and Bounded by a Nutshell, making general notes as I go. Make task lists for next steps for both novels.

  • Chameleon’s Dish
  • Note-taking goal accomplished for this WIP.
  • Next, I will begin the task list for this project. I am targeting February 10 as my tentative completion date.
  • Bounded by a Nutshell –

  • Note-taking for Chapters One-Five completed before 1/27 update.

  • The idea that I had for the first scene means a significant rewrite of the early scenes, which will be much stronger, after. I’m excited about the possibilities opening up, and will be playing with ideas via flash fiction – and lots of dreaming!

  • Complete note-taking for Chapter Six by 1/30 update.

Begin timelines for both stories, throughout all WIP and extrapolated novels.

  • Sima Garo Provides

  • Chapters Two and Three synopses complete.

  • I didn’t make my goal for this; I forgot that each chapter contains four scenes, some rather long.

  • I am adapting this to two chapters each week.

  • I completed two chapters this week.

  • I will reach Chapter Five of this process by the 2/3 update.

  • Bounded by a Nutshell

  • Synopses for Chapters One -Five completed before 1/27 update.

  • I’ve found at least one scene, thus far, that is a throwaway. That leads me to think that there is value beyond the timeline in this project; because, if there is little of value to summarize, that is a good indication of a scene that fails to capture attention or to move the plot along…

  • I will complete the Chapter Six synopsis by the 1/30 update.

Flash Fiction:

Create new flash fiction weekly through prompts, challenges, envisioning WIP scenes, and original ideas.

  • I wrote a flash fiction piece, Introduction to Kivaswine, while experimenting with an alternate scene for Bounded by a Nutshell, Chapter One, Scene One.

  • I posted this  to Trueborn Jottingsmy first-ever publicly offered flash fan fiction. I know there is a camp that says I ought to be embarrassed at writing it,and that respectable writers don’t share such ill-begotten literary offspring…

  • But, here’s the thing – This writing is so integral to my life and my creativity, I’ve decided to trust in that passion and own it, so more Star Trek fanfiction will certainly be in the offing. I will never charge for any of these stories. =D

  • Goal completed for this week.

  • In addition, I have freewritten two more scenes for this experimental storyline, and will revise these as flash fiction, and perhaps future sharing.

Revise existing pieces in my Writing Bullpen files, with an eye to submitting and/or creating a collection for a potential book. Aim for one biweekly.

  • I finished The Last House.

  • This story took on a life of its own during revisions. I have saved various bits, and think there may be full-sized short story, or even a novella, in there…

  • Goal of completing by 1/27 update completed.

  • Next story up will be A Splash of Red, and then Morning Coffee.

  • I will revise the next story by the February 10 update.

Submit at least one short story to a paying market each month.

  • Submitted on 1/27, to the market that rejected it a month or so ago.

  • Goal completed for this month.

Exposition:

Return to 750 words.com. Use this space for free expository writing at least every other day, and strive to complete every day of the round.

Write book reviews forBowlful of Bunnies and Finding Esta, once I have finished reading them.

Bowlful of Bunnies – reading completed.

  • I have completed a rough draft of this review, and will let it rest a bit before revising.

  • Goal to write rough draft before 1/27 completed.

  • Post review before 2/3 update.

Finding Esta –Reading is complete.

  • I used freewriting time to jot original impressions and notes during Thursday’s expository writing session.

  • Goal of freewriting before 1/27 update complete.

  • I will have a completed rough draft by the Sunday, February 3 update.

Complete one essay or other piece of expository writing each week.

  • I have completed my family issue piece, Written Beatings?.

  • I was unsure about a portion of this draft, in an area I was too close to, and made the leap of faith of posting on two facebook groups to ask for readers. I got a reply from Elizabeth “Buffy Greentree”, who helped me immensely.

  • During freewriting, I began to explore the idea of obedience vs, judgment, something I have been pondering for quite a while now.

  • I completed this essay.

  • Goal exceeded for this week.

Connecting:

 Blogging:

Create blog rolls for shanjeniah (writers and resources), and Trueborn Jottings (resources and inspiration).

  •  Links added to my spiffy new blogroll:
  • Tia Bach, Author of Depression Cookies

  • alberta ross – so many words, so many pictures and worlds created

  • The Cellar Door

  • I’ve decided to work first on shanjeniah, and then Trueborn Jottings, simply because shanjeniah is more often visited, is older, and many links from there will also be relevant at Jottings.

Edit sidebars and layout for all blogs (excepting childrens’ reporting blogs).

  • I created a list of next steps for shanjeniah’s sidebar, and will move through this list, adding new items as they occur:

  • Check page list – delete or hide ones that are no longer relevant.

  • Check. I made several pages private, and will later consider what to do with the information they contain.

  • Search bar to top of page.

  • Check. I can’t put it above the pages, so it’s directly under. I gave it a title, and it seems to stand out better, now.

  • Replace participant NaNo 2012 badge with Winner’s Badge.

  • Check.

  • Add August CampNaNo Winner’s Badge and WIP Title.

  • Check.

  • Blog calendar under Pages.

  • Check. I also changed the design, because the palette I was using did not show well which days I had posted.

  • Goal completed for this week.

  • Remaining projects:

  • Update Unfettered badge.

  • Add link to Trueborn Jottings

  • Update Facebook badge.

  • Add Twitter, Pinterest badges.

  • Blog follow under calendar.

  • Archives under blog follow.

  • I will have this sidebar edited by February 15.

Write at least one post weekly for three major blogs (shanjeniah; TruebornJottings, andThe Unfettered Life.

  • My posts for this week:

Visiting:

Complete all ROW80 sponsor visits twice weekly; comment, and share posts I read.

  • Blogs I’ve visited this session:

Read weekly at a writer-oriented blog that appeals to me; comment; share; learn; absorb, try, grow.

Submit guest posts, at least once monthly.

  • Goal completed for January.

  • I will begin my February post by the January 30 update.

Social Media:

Visit Pinterest, SheWrites, or StoryDam at least weekly. Get a better sense of how each works, and build my presence there with sharing, commenting, and asking questions.

  • Goal completed for this week.

Continue visiting and interacting through Facebook and Twitter, especially via relevant groups, several times a week.

  • Facebook – Groups, a bit of scrolling and sharing, comments.

  • Twitter – Just a quick peek; no interaction as yet.

  • This goal fell a bit by the wayside this week, with other writing and editing taking precedence.

 Claiming:

 Poetry Book Project:

  •  Gather resources for learning how to publish ebooks.
  • I bought an ebook on self-publishing, to add to my resource banks.

  • Do a search for other e-publishing sources, and continue adding links throughout the round.

Owning My Perspective and Experiences:

At least once weekly, use expository writing time to explore memories, wounds, healing, perspective, or personal philosophy.

  • I wrote the intro to this piece, finished Obedience vs. Judgment, completed Written Beatings?, and did other random mental wandering.

  • Goal attained for this week.

Continue my eating and health goals from Round 4, 2012. Aim to get to the Y once alone, and once with the children, each week.

  • We’ve figured a plan for car sharing, so, beginning next week, we will be getting out to the Y!

  • I am continuing to attend to my eating, but have slipped a bit on water.

  • My writing energy has encompassed Slack and High Tides. My knee is feeling better, but the kids’ shifting sleep schedules have them currently waking up in the middle of Jim’s sleep, an hour or two later than I want to be up. I don’t want them waking up alone, and Annalise doesn’t like to be the only one awake when it’s dark, so I’ve been staying up till both kids are awake. Last night, that meant three hours of sleep, so I’m weary, and happy it’s Jim’s weekend.

  • I have been writing intensely, and with intensity. I’ve felt the surge coming for a while. I completed two essays, wrote a fan fiction piece, and thoroughly rewrote a very emotional flash fiction piece that may end up evolving into something much more.

  • I’ve been editing Finding Esta, and, because I love the story and know how upset Shah has been about the bumps in the road. Some other things are waiting; mostly the poetry project, because it is a goal I know I can complete fairly straightforwardly.

  • Other than writing and my workout, I also spent more time in Annalise’s room, did general hometending, and kept the house wood supply restocked through the fierce cold.

Reclaiming Our Home:

  •  Clean Annalise’s and Jeremiah’s bedrooms, creating spaces of welcome and haven for them, with room for their favorite things and activities.
  • All of the shelves were finished by the 25th, and I began sorting through bins and bags, getting all of those that were on the floor.

  • We will continue to go through bins and bags, and her room will be done by the 30th, so that I will have a day off before shifting her room to maintenance mode and beginning Jeremiah’s on February 1st.

  • I am definitely on track to make this goal.

Work on general decuttering at least five days a week, focusing on a clutter-prone area when time, attention, and energy allow.

  • I spent time in general decluttering.

  • I cleaned some outgrown clothes from the table in the living room.

  • I have cleaned 6 of 7 days, and met this goal for the week.

A few last points:

I plan to work on each major goal every session, and work in the minor goals as my time and focus allow.

  • I managed every goal but the poetry book. Since I added a spontaneous editing project, I am very OK with that.

I will evaluate my goals, progress and preferences biweekly. on Sunday, and adjust accordingly.

  • Next evaluation will be posted as my Sunday, February 3 update.
